Almost a year after an individual threw bottles and yelled racial epithets at a group of black students by the Sigma Pi fraternity, three Sigma Pi brothers spoke Thursday about the fraternity’s subsequent involvement in campus initiatives against racism.

Student protesters who voiced grievances about the administration’s handling of bias incidents on campus took their demands from the doorstep of Day Hall — where they staged a sit-in protest Thursday — into a conference room with President David Skorton on Friday.

Although some students criticized the University for what they saw as its inadequate response, Susan Murphy ’73 Ph.D. ’94, vice president of student and academic services, also stressed the importance of dialogue, saying it would be helpful to know which students administrators should be responding to.

After a string of racial bias incidents and sexual assaults at Cornell in the past six months, student leaders met Saturday to try to strengthen communication between groups on campus.

Now that the University has responded to the racial incident at Sigma Pi last spring, student minority leaders are both expressing cautious optimism and emphasizing the need for further reform.
