Rating the Rankings
September 5th, 2008Another school year begins, and with it the questions: How do I stack up? Where do I fit in? What does he or she think of me? And it’s not only the 3,183 new freshman faces asking. With the release of yet another onslaught of college rankings, ranging from the traditional U.S. News and World Report to the “irreverent” standings of Radar Magazine, concerns expressed by the Cornell community indicate that the University, itself, is asking similar questions. A little self-reflection is never a bad thing, and inquiry is a founding principle of the quest for wisdom. Yet such annual college rankings, in their myriad forms, often inspire, along with inferiority complexes, self-doubt. And such concerns are not unfounded. Read More

Fall-ing for Sports
September 5th, 2008From orientation to the infamous primal scream before finals to Slope Day, on the hill we tend to mark beginnings and ends with some sort of celebration or tradition. This especially holds true for Big Red sports teams, many of which began training over the summer to prepare for the fall season. The women’s varsity soccer team kicked off the fall season on Aug. 22 with the team’s first official practice. Although Aug. 22 marked the team’s first practice at Cornell, the players trained over the summer to improve fitness and strength before returning to campus. Each athlete had her own fitness “packet” that required six days of workout per week, said Whitney Stich ’09, team captain. Read More
You Should Lose Five Pounds
September 5th, 2008So, Who Am I? This past summer while working in New York City, I decided to take a Friday afternoon off. My dear friend and Eclipse’s esteemed editor Leigha Kemmett had invited me to Gramercy Tavern for a drunken lunch date. After our cocktails and bottle of wine — and really good lemon risotto — Leigha made an offer I couldn’t refuse (even though I perhaps should have). “We need a new advice columnist for Eclipse. Will you do it?” I was pretty sure she was joking. Or just wasted. After all, I’m generally uninterested in other people’s problems. Generally, disinterested people don’t proffer the most insightful counsel. However, she assured me that her offer was sincere, despite the bellinis and cabernet. She thought it could be funny… Read More
Welcome to the New Eclipse!
September 5th, 2008A month or so ago, I was browsing a newsstand in JFK Airport looking for an enticing magazine to read on a quick flight to San Diego. Bored by all of the fashion magazines with the same exact articles (couture in the recession) and news magazines with the same exact cover (Mr. or Mrs. Obama), I wished for a magazine that had unique and engaging content, content that I actually wanted to read. My hope with the new Eclipse is that it will fill this void, by providing interesting content that Sun readers look forward to each week. Read More

For our first week back in action, I’ve put together something a little different for you — instead of a mini-bio of a super awesome Ithacan, we’re having a lesson on the culture of the super awesome Ithaca itself. Get excited. This is “10 things to do/reasons why you absolutely must spend a summer in this place you normally call home only when stressing over prelim after prelim.” Read More
What's All That Ruckus?
September 5th, 2008Much of our time on campus this semester will be spent consuming music, television shows and movies through our computers. Much of that entertainment will be obtained through electronic methods — some legal, most not. Many times before, I have written about those more seedy methods of obtaining music on campus, so I’m not going to do so again. (Freshmen: visit cornellsun.com and search for “DC++” if you are interested.) No, this semester’s inaugural Optimized Queries was inspired by an email sent by Kent Hubbell, the dean of students, to all of his charges at the beginning of orientation. One paragraph in particular drew my attention. Read More
From Persian Gulf to Cayuga Lake
September 5th, 2008This summer when I was in Ithaca researching genetics, I learned that Cornell has been traditionally very good at hockey, lacrosse and rowing (among other sports). Cornellians take pride in this fact, and why shouldn’t we? Hail Cornell! Well, there is one more reason to be proud when it comes to sports, although it might be on a smaller scale. This February, Cornell's Doha Campus — the Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q) — fielded its cricket team in the Education City Cricket League and won the finals against Texas A&M Qatar. GO BIG RED!! Read More

The Teenybopper Takeover
September 5th, 2008This summer, I opted for one last summer break free from hardcore internships and academia. This summer, I gave one big silent middle finger to The System and chose camp counselor-dom. Yes, I spent eight wonderful weeks wearing white polos and khakis all for the sake of being a glorified babysitter. You learn a lot by hanging out with seven to 11 year old girls for two months. Firstly, who knew that my beloved Hanson had been replaced by the Jonas Brothers? Who knew that Crocs, the worst thing anyone ever did with plastic, are “in,” especially when they have widgets in them? Not widgets! Jibbitz. Gosh. Read More
The $30 Bar Set
September 5th, 2008When I decided to cross coasts for college, I realized I was going to spend the next four years living with the contents of two suitcases and a carry-on, which doesn’t explain why I’m currently using checked baggage space for a juicer and handmade bitter. A good bar set isn’t dirt cheap, but it doesn’t have to be too expensive, either. The examples below are generally the cheapest I could find. You’ll get by on them, but for heavy use you’ll want more expensive versions. Ice cube tray, set of two: $2.09 Read More
