It’s My Birthday. Will I Shave My Head Today?

Julie Block  —  Aug 29, 2007

Today is my 21st birthday. Woot.

Now, you’re probably thinking — why isn’t this chick excited? She’s twenty-one! She’s legal! Stop being such a downer, Julie. But here’s the deal: aside from the fact that life isn’t that much different, the last birthday I had to look forward to has arrived. And now, all I have left, as my friend Nick put it, is to “get a real job, work 8-hour days, get married, have kids, lose your freedom, and then, of course, die.” (As you can see, he’s a real upper.)

Celebrating Our Roots with a Side of Grass

As your friendly native-Ithacan-still-in-residence I’ve decided to let you in on a local secret (although it’s not really a secret) — a four-day hippie-fest that absolutely must be attended once in your lifetime (like seeing the Pope or making pilgrimage to Mecca). The GrassRoots Festival of Music and Dance, held annually in my lovely hometown of Trumansburg, N.Y. (about 20 minutes outside of Ithaca, and home to the infamous Rongovian Embassy bar), is, to say the least, an exceptionally unique experience. The festival takes place over a weekend in late July and goes nuts from Thursday around 5pm until Sunday (well, really Monday) at about 4am.

Hello all you impressionable freshman. Welcome to Cornell. I'm here today to mold some minds so allow me to use this opportunity to drop some knowledge on you: you're going to be doing a lot of studying here. No matter what you've been told or how well you've convinced yourself it's not going to happen, I promise you that you'll be studying sooner than you think possible. And when you do, you'll need good music to keep you awake, alert and motivated. I don't study as a rule, but for those of you who do, I've been thinking about some songs that might help out.

Hello
