Re: “The Hypocrisy of Scorpions X,” Opinion, Sept. 24

Scorpions X, an anonymous “anti-oppression” group on campus, recently published 1,000 copies of their satirical spin on The Sun, “The Cornell Nightly Moon,” and intermingled them in The Sun’s carrels in time for homecoming. Among the couple dozen or so polemical pieces which allege widespread and institutional oppressive polices at Cornell, one in particular, “Gay Student Leaders Blind to LGBT Struggles …” shows just how out of touch Scorpions X is with the campus. Could LGBT leaders really be ignorant of gay — i.e. their own — struggles? Obviously, no, but when LGBT leaders assert the “radical” opinion that Cornell can be a friendly place, the Scorpions X are driven to senseless polemic in trying to maintain that Cornell is universally oppressive.

In remaining anonymous, the Scorpions X aim be more than a group of individuals and represent the minorities who lack a voice. But when they blatantly ignore the very minorities they aim to represent, they discredit themselves and bring scorn to the minorities who sensibly aim for authentic progress.
