No team in baseball was more disappointing than the NL East inhabiting Miami Marlins last season. The Marlins and Toronto Blue Jays made headlines with a blockbuster trade in the offseason, but are headed in very different directions.
Speedskater Bridie Farrell ’08 is currently training with the hopes of making the 2014 U.S. Olympic team; however, the path she took to get there is more complex than earning a Cornell diploma and practicing endlessly skating around a track.
After not playing in an official match or tournament since October, the golf team looked very rusty in the Yale Spring Opener, the first tournament of the spring. The Red finished last in the 13-team field, with its five players shooting a combined score of 644 in the two-round tournament. Villanova placed first with a combined score of 583, 9-strokes less than its nearest competitor.
The men’s polo team finished the regular season on a high note with a commanding 25-14 win over the Maryland Polo Club on Friday at Oxley Equestrian Center. Although the women also had a final regular season game scheduled for the weekend, the team’s match against the Baltimore Polo Club was cancelled, so the women took the weekend off from competition.
The Cornell women’s rowing team lost the chase for this year’s Cayuga Cup to Yale on Saturday. Ever since 2003, when Cornell created the Cayuga Cup for the winner of the Varsity eight race, these two squads have fought hard for the title. Yale (No. 10) ultimately dominated Cornell (No. 18) in four of five races to reclaim the Cup for the first time since 2010.
On Friday, the gymnastics team travels to the Gold Dome in Shreveport, La., where it will participate in the USAG Nationals against seven other teams in a three-day event.
This past weekend the men's rowing teams kicked off its season with competitive races. The lightweight team enjoyed some success in its matchup against Harvard and Penn in Pennsylvania, while the heavyweight team struggled in its season opening races against Harvard in Massachusetts. Both teams will use this past weekend's races to learn from and build boat speed for future competitions.
The Cornell men’s tennis team has a game tally of 12-6 for the season and 1-2 in the Ivy League matches after this weekend. The team won its first match of the weekend in New Hampshire against Dartmouth on Saturday April 6th, but lost to Harvard in Massachusetts the following day.
