Local Alums, Local Business Owners

November 21st, 2008
By Keri Blakinger
What do a Korean BBQ, a dance club and a burrito place all have in common? For one thing, they’re all businesses located in Collegetown — Dasan-J on Dryden Rd., Level B on Eddy St. and That Burrito Place on College Ave. — but aside from proximity they hold something else in common. Before each of these places was a real business, it was once a vague dream in the mind of a starry-eyed Cornell student. These dreamers have graduated, though and they’re no longer starry-eyed students, but rather local small business owners and Cornell success stories. Read More

Heroes and Villains: Greeks: Socialists?

November 21st, 2008
It’s a cold, dark night here at H&V, where papers are made and dreams are broken. We feel pretty fratty this week, what with all the conversation about Greek life and drinking and brotherhood and sisterhood. We’d like to think we’ve formed a brotherhood of sorts down in our cave at H&V: We spend lots of time with each other, we help each other with homework and we argue about who gets the best chair at dinner. It hasn’t been easy, but let’s just say it’s been a very exciting ride. I didn’t quite know where to begin, but kissing a girl seemed like the natural first step. This proved harder than I had anticipated — perhaps my skinny jeans and oversized pink Vera Bradley tote turned them off? — and thus I decided to start by styling myself as the virile bachelor in order to fully embrace my new high-testosterone, possibly pussy-chomping lifestyle. Imagine it’s 6 a.m. on a Sunday morning. You’re still drunk from last night, you’ve got work and laundry piling up and it’s not even light out. Yet here you are at Barton Hall, chugging coffee and assembling steel trusses, heavy-duty rigging for light fixtures and scaffolds into a stage. You’re making signs that say: ‘Backstage Band Area’ or ‘Bathrooms Here,’ or running errands to Wegmans to buy your guests of honor their organic bottled water of choice. A truck breaks down on its way to Ithaca, so the stage you need to have assembled by 3 p.m. won’t be ready for a few more hours. But the show must go on — will go on, at 6 p.m. Screw how early it is, it’s time to get to work. Read More
